Glazing and finishing of balconies

Balconies allow you to use their space to expand rooms or place inside various attributes of the interior. The only obstacle to the implementation of such a desire can be climatic conditions. Solve this problem with the help of insulation and interior decoration. This allows not only to give it a nice design, but also significantly reduce heat loss, which is very important in modern conditions.

Cold glazing

Glazing the balcony is one of the first steps to be taken during repairs. This design will protect the home from external influences and maintain an optimal indoor climate.

You can organize cold glazing with the help of several materials:

Tree. The window frames of this substance can be either single or double, but this does not always allow to increase the insulation.Designs of this type are not very popular, since to maintain an optimal state, the tree must be periodically treated with protective agents (paint, varnish, etc.). If this is not done, this will lead to the appearance of cracks and the loss of tightness of the frame, followed by drafts, moisture, etc.

Still, wooden windows have their advantages, among which we can highlight the high decorative properties and safety of the material for the human body.

Metal glazing involves the use of steel frames that hold the glass. To increase tightness, in places of joints establish special sealing elastic bands. The metal is no longer so whimsical and needs less processing. This allows you to operate similar designs for several decades. The disadvantages include the unpresentable appearance and the inability to maintain the temperature in a certain range.

Aluminum. The profile of such a metal is perfectly suitable for the formation of window frames, since it practically does not undergo oxidation. This allows you to exclude painting or the implementation of other protective measures. Such systems have a very attractive look. Many balcony owners carry out glazing only with such products. The aluminum profile allows you to organize not only opening but also sliding doors of different sizes.

Warm designs as a guarantee of comfort

Many apartment owners today are trying to re-equip the balcony or loggia for residential premises. This allows you to place there not only conservation, but also a bed, a TV or other types of furniture.

Warm glazing can be organized using these materials:

Aluminum profile. To improve the thermal insulation characteristics of the frame of this metal, manufacturers equip it with additional insulating materials. These inserts allow you to avoid the appearance of cold bridges around the perimeter of the window. In such a frame can already install a two-or three-layer glass.

Metal profile. PVC windows have high heat retention. They are used to maintain the temperature on the balcony at the same level as in the main room.In the manufacture of plastic profiles using metal inserts, which significantly increase the strength and allow you to give the frame a complex shape of non-standard sizes.

The disadvantages of plastic glazing include a relatively large weight of the structure. This leads to the fact that such structures can be installed only on strong bases made of concrete, metal profiles, etc.

Frameless designs: practicality and unique design

A kind of cold glazing are windows in which there are no vertical supporting elements. The frameless design consists of several basic elements:

  1. Top and bottom profiles. Such elements are made of aluminum. The shape and size of the structure depends on the dimensions of the balcony room. Some modifications make it possible to install such windows even on the perimeters of irregular geometrical shape (semicircle, trapezium, etc.).
  2. Glass. For such window structures use special reinforced materials that are able to withstand significant wind and other types of physical exertion.
  3. Closers, rollers, limiters, etc. These elements are used for arranging practical systems. This makes it possible to eliminate accidental damage to the sash during closing.

Balconies with panoramic windows are very beautiful designs that allow you to increase the luminous flux into the house. In winter, the operation of such systems is hampered, since the ingress of moisture can lead to freezing of the valves. Apply similar glazing often as a decorative element. Frameless glass is a unique opportunity to organize a summer garden on the balcony and turn the room into small tropics.

Materials for insulation

Warm glazing of balconies and finishing will not always bring a positive effect if you do not take care of the insulation of all other surfaces. Today, for solving such problems, experts recommend using several different materials:

  1. Penoplex. This substance is very easily processed and at the same time it retains heat qualitatively. Can be used for both interior and exterior. Not able to maintain its properties when exposed to sunlight, therefore, requires additional finishing.
  2. Isover is a type of mineral wool. Available in rolls or sheets. The material is characterized by very good sound and heat insulation, and also has a low weight, which simplifies working with it.
  3. Polyurethane foam. Used for sealing gaps, as the substance seizes well and at the same time practically does not give in to burning.
  4. Styrofoam (styrodur). These products have similar properties, but they do not withstand exposure to sunlight. Styrodur differs considerable strength and thermal insulation characteristics.
  5. Penofol. Get the product by applying polyethylene foam on a metal foil. This material perfectly reflects heat and does not allow cold streams to enter the house. It is often used in conjunction with penoplex, where they are laid in several layers.

Decorating the walls

Finishing work on the balcony involves the protection of surfaces with special materials, among which there are several main products:

  • Paint. Painting the walls is one of the easiest ways to give them a certain appearance.Suitable only for pre-aligned walls or in the case of combining several design approaches.
  • Clapboard. Products in this category are practical and simple. Today on the market you can find a clapboard made of wood or plastic. This allows you to create unique interiors that are unpretentious to care. The advantages of these products include ease of installation, since this process can be managed even without experience.

Please note that the finishing of such materials is possible only in the presence of warm glazing, as the substances quickly deteriorate when temperature and humidity drops.

  • Decorative stone (brick tile).Such products are notable for not only beautiful design, but also high practicality. The material is perfectly washed, able to withstand significant temperature drops and it is not afraid of ultraviolet radiation. It is possible to carry out the interior trim with a decorative stone, both with warm and cold glazing.
  • Drywall. This material is used only in warm rooms. Experts recommend to carry out interior decoration only with the help of moisture-resistant types of drywall. After installation, this material can be covered with other decorative products, such as bamboo wallpaper, etc.
  • Decorative plaster. This approach to the design of the walls appeared relatively recently, but already managed to win a lot of positive feedback. These coatings are characterized by a long service life, practicality and unique design properties. It is very easy to take care of plaster, and if you need to restore its condition, you can simply paint the walls. The disadvantages of this approach include only the high price of materials and surface formation.

Reliable floor

The floor on the balcony plays one of the important roles, therefore, its arrangement is also approached very carefully. Depending on the microclimate on the balcony, its base can be built using several types of materials:

  1. For cold rooms, experts recommend using coatings such as self-leveling or concrete floors. These substances tolerate frosts without losing their basic properties. In some cases, you can equip the base with ceramic tiles or natural stone.Be sure to use only resistant to temperature changes of materials and binders for them.
  2. The floor on the balcony with warm glazing can be done using a variety of materials. But many owners prefer wooden floors. For this, a crate is initially formed, inside which an insulation is additionally placed. Then the boards are already attached to the logs, which are polished and painted upon completion.

If you wish to use parquet or laminate, you just need to equip the base of moisture-resistant plywood or OSB sheets. Regardless of the material chosen on the basis of wood, such surfaces significantly increase the thermal insulation characteristics. Please note that this floor is also pleasant to the touch and does not need additional coverage, unlike tiles.

We form the ceiling

Finishing of these surfaces is done in a variety of ways that depend on the temperature conditions on the balcony. If the balcony is cold, then paint can be used as a finishing material.

In the case of warm rooms, there are a few more options. The easiest way is to paint or finish sheets of drywall. When you need to create a unique design, then you can resort to the installation of plastic or decorative lining, bamboo, etc. Regardless of what material you use when finishing, you need to evaluate its technical characteristics and take into account reviews of people who have already used such substances.

Glazing and finishing of a balcony is a complicated process, therefore, only experienced professionals who will do everything much faster and more qualitatively than amateurs need to trust its implementation.
